StrataClerk

Clear footage where it matters, handled the right way.

After package thefts, parkade break-ins, or vandalism, cameras are usually the council’s first thought - and a reasonable one, since good footage both deters and documents. The pitfalls are buying poor coverage, unusable night footage, or a system that runs afoul of privacy rules.

Note down the incidents and where they happened, and we’ll ask strata-experienced CCTV installers to propose coverage - camera placement, retention, and the privacy policy the system should operate under.

Common questions

CCTV questions councils ask

Where can a strata legally place security cameras?
Common areas with a genuine security purpose - entrances, lobbies, parkades, garbage rooms, elevators. Under BC’s Personal Information Protection Act, the strata should adopt a policy stating purpose, placement, retention period, and access to footage, post signage, and never aim cameras at unit doors’ interiors, windows, or private spaces.
How long should CCTV footage be kept?
Most stratas retain footage for two to four weeks - long enough for incidents to be reported and investigated, short enough to respect privacy principles of keeping personal information no longer than needed. The retention period should be written into the strata’s camera policy and matched by the recorder’s storage sizing.
What matters most when comparing CCTV proposals?
Coverage of your actual incident locations, night-time image quality (ask for sample footage), storage duration, warranty, and who can access recordings and how. Camera counts are a poor comparison metric - six well-placed cameras beat twelve badly placed ones, which is why proposals should start from your incidents, not a product list.
